Mechanical Engineers (SOC 17-2141). Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS, May 2025, via O*NET OnLine. Wage surveys run about a year behind current offers.
BLS publishes no wage estimate for mechanical engineering technologists and technicians (SOC 17-3027) in metro Miami. The Florida median for that group is $59,720, against $74,510 nationally, so a technician or mechanical designer search here is best priced off the state figure.
What the spread means in practice: the gap between the 10th and 90th percentile in Miami is $97,830. Tampa pays slightly more at the median, $100,290, which is $630 above Miami, and its floor is higher, at $68,290 for the 10th percentile against $62,680. Miami is ahead at the top, with a 90th percentile of $160,510 against $159,050 in Tampa. What’s driving demand for mechanical engineers in Miami
- Miami International Airport. The $12 billion Modernization in Action program includes the Concourse D West Extension, 17 gates with construction due to start in 2027 and finish in 2030, and the new Concourse K, a $600.6 million design-build contract. Central Terminal Redevelopment Phase II is a $372.3 million project. A 20-year agreement with FPL covers resilient power.
- Water and wastewater. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer budgeted $789.985 million in capital spending for fiscal year 2025 to 2026, including $581.130 million for wastewater. The plan carries $1.449 billion for ocean outfall legislation and $679.147 million for the South District plant expansion.
- Ports and shore power. PortMiami’s shore power program cost $125 million, or $25 million per terminal, with $21.7 million in state and federal grants. Up to three ships can plug in at once. Royal Caribbean Group also broke ground on Terminal G, a $345 million project.
- Power and storage. FPL plans $3.8 billion of battery storage, 1,419.5 MW in 2026 and 819.5 MW in 2027, plus a $78 million long-duration pilot due by 2027. The sites are statewide, and the filing does not name South Florida locations.
- Data centers. Iron Mountain’s MIA-1 is due to launch in 2026 as a carbon-free facility. Baxtel lists 27 data centers within 15 miles of it, including Equinix, CoreSite and Digital Realty.
- Engine overhaul. RTX said on April 21, 2026 that Pratt & Whitney’s $20 million expansion of the West Palm Beach Engine Center raised capacity for geared turbofan engine maintenance by 40%.
Mechanical specialties tied to these projects
- HVAC and MEP engineers for airport terminals, central plants and high-rise towers.
- Plant and process mechanical engineers for Miami-Dade’s wastewater plants, including centrifuges and pumping.
- Marine and port mechanical engineers for shore power, cranes and terminals at PortMiami and Port Everglades.
- Power and storage engineers for FPL’s solar and battery build-out.
- Data center cooling engineers for new and expanding facilities in Miami-Dade.
- Aerospace manufacturing and test engineers for engine overhaul work in Palm Beach County.
The talent pipeline
- Universities. The University of Miami’s College of Engineering has a Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. FIU’s Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering offers BS, MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering. Florida Atlantic University also offers a BS in mechanical engineering. Broward College offers an Engineering Technology A.S. in Mechanical Design and Fabrication for technician and designer roles.
- Data centers. Cooling and power work on new facilities is a growing share of local mechanical hiring. See our data center map.
- Licensing. Senior roles often require a Florida PE license. The Florida Board of Professional Engineers issues it after the Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering exams and the required experience.
What this means if you’re hiring
- Price near the Florida median, not the national one. Metro Miami’s median of $99,660 is $4,450 under the US figure, and Florida sits within $320 of Miami.
- Budget senior roles at the 75th to 90th percentile. That is $127,810 to $160,510, and Miami’s top end beats Florida’s by $6,560.
- Expect Tampa and Palm Beach to compete. Tampa’s median is $100,290 with a higher floor, and Palm Beach County’s aviation, aerospace and engineering base has more than 20,000 employees at 1,760 companies.
- Plan around long project clocks. MIA’s Concourse D starts in 2027 and ends in 2030, and the water program carries $6.44 billion in unfunded needs beyond its current plan. See our guide to hiring a mechanical engineer.
