Miami Data Center Engineer Talent Map (2026)
What data center engineers earn in metro Miami, who employs them, where in South Florida they work, and the interconnection, colocation and large campus proposals competing for them.
Staffing a data center project?A talent map shows where a group of professionals works, what they are paid and who else is trying to hire them. This one covers data center engineers in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro area, which spans Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and is called metro Miami or South Florida here. Pay figures come from the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics wage survey (May 2025), and the project picture uses news, county votes and project trackers published from 2024 to 2026. Our data center recruiters update it as new data comes out. See also our Miami electrical, controls and civil engineer talent maps.

What the spread means in practice: Tampa pays $102,110 for electrical engineers and $100,290 for mechanical engineers, so Miami is $690 above Tampa on electrical and $630 below on mechanical. Data center skills often command more than these medians because the BLS codes cover all employers.
Where Miami’s data center engineers work
Interconnection operators
Equinix runs MI1, MI2 and MI6 in Miami. MI1, the NAP of the Americas at 50 NE 9th Street, is a six-story building that Equinix calls the primary network exchange point between the US and Latin America.
Digital Realty (MIA10), CoreSite, DataBank, QTS, EdgeConneX and Iron Mountain also have Miami sites.
New builders
Iron Mountain’s MIA-1 in Westview is 150,000 square feet and 16 MW. Brasfield & Gorrie is the general contractor.
Metrobloks is building about 112,900 square feet and 15 to 17 MW at 500 NW 137th Avenue, targeted for late 2026.
Broward and Palm Beach operators
Flexential Fort Lauderdale, 365 Data Centers Fort Lauderdale and Volico in Deerfield Beach are listed Broward facilities. Boca Raton has its own subsea cable landing stations.
PBA Holdings proposed Project Tango in Loxahatchee. A smaller two-building, 100,000 square foot plan approved in 2016 can still proceed.
Power and design support
FPL serves more than 6 million customer accounts and is a partner on PortMiami’s 16 MW shore power system, a comparable large-load build.
Kimley-Horn’s Coral Gables office offers mechanical, electrical and plumbing services and energy consulting.
Where the talent sits: Miami submarkets
Downtown Miami
InterconnectionSubsea
The NAP of the Americas sits at 50 NE 9th Street. Equinix says the building has N+1 power and cooling and generators with 30 or more hours of fuel at full load.
Westview
New buildColocation
Iron Mountain MIA-1 is at 2925 NW 120th Terrace, about 8 miles from Miami International Airport.
West Miami-Dade
New buildInference
Metrobloks’ site targets low-latency inference near subsea cables. Miami-Dade has 34 tracked data center facilities.
Broward
ColocationDisaster recovery
Fort Lauderdale and Deerfield Beach facilities serve disaster recovery, second sites and edge capacity.
Loxahatchee and Palm Beach County
Large campusRegulation
Project Tango, at 20125 Southern Boulevard, was a 600 MW proposal. The county’s moratorium covers loads of 50 MW or more.
What’s driving demand for data center engineers in Miami
- Latin America interconnection. The NAP of the Americas has 18 subsea cables connected, and Equinix describes Miami as a gateway to Latin America.
- Iron Mountain MIA-1. The 16 MW site topped out in September 2025. Iron Mountain guided to full capacity by mid-2026, and an opening had not been confirmed as of August 2026.
- Metrobloks. The 15 to 17 MW Tier III design targets late 2026.
- AI and GPU density. MIA-1 is designed for GPUs, and Equinix says its Miami sites support high-density AI deployments.
- Palm Beach County limits. Commissioners voted 5 to 1 on July 16, 2026 to deny Project Tango, which was 3.6 million square feet and 600 MW. On September 24, 2026 they voted 6 to 0 for a one-year pause on new applications at 50 MW or more in unincorporated areas.
- Rules in progress. During the pause the county is drafting standards on noise, water and electricity use, and distance from homes.
Data center specialties tied to these projects
- Critical power engineers for generators, UPS and switchgear at MIA-1 and Metrobloks.
- Mechanical and cooling engineers for high-density and GPU loads.
- Hurricane-ready design engineers for facilities in a state FEMA rates at relatively high climate risk.
- Commissioning engineers for sites opening in 2026.
- Network and interconnection engineers for subsea and exchange sites in Miami and Boca Raton.
The talent pipeline
- Florida International University. FIU’s electrical and computer engineering programs and its mechanical engineering program are ABET-accredited.
- University of Miami and FAU. UM’s electrical and mechanical bachelor’s programs are ABET-accredited, as are FAU’s electrical and mechanical degrees.
- Licensing. Senior roles often need a Florida PE license from the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.

What this means if you’re hiring
- Do not rely on the median. Miami’s electrical median is $102,800, but critical power experience is priced above it. Plan on $133,070 or more at the 75th percentile.
- Cooling is the tighter pool. Mechanical engineers earn $99,660 at the median, but the 90th percentile of $160,510 shows what top candidates cost.
- Expect mid-sized projects. Miami-Dade builds are 15 to 17 MW colocation sites, not gigawatt campuses.
- Watch Palm Beach County. The pause runs for up to a year from September 24, 2026, so large campus work may move elsewhere in Florida.
