The short version: A supply chain analyst uses data to help a company buy, make, store, and ship products at the right cost and speed. They forecast demand, track inventory, measure supplier and carrier performance, and build reports that drive decisions. It is a popular entry point into supply chain for business, engineering, and analytics graduates.

What does a supply chain analyst do?

  • Forecast demand and recommend inventory levels
  • Track KPIs like fill rate, on-time delivery, inventory turns, and freight cost
  • Find the root cause of stockouts, delays, and cost overruns
  • Model what-if scenarios such as a new warehouse, supplier, or shipping lane
  • Build dashboards and present findings to operations, procurement, and finance
  • Clean and maintain master data in the ERP

Frequently asked questions

Is supply chain analyst a good career?

Yes. Demand for logisticians is projected to grow faster than average, and the analyst role builds skills that transfer across industries.

Do supply chain analysts need to code?

Not always, but SQL is increasingly expected, and Python is a strong advantage for senior and data-focused roles.

What is the difference between a supply chain analyst and a logistics analyst?

Logistics analysts focus on transportation and warehousing. Supply chain analysts cover the wider chain, including planning, inventory, and suppliers.
