Where Jacksonville’s electrical engineers work
Utilities
JEA is a publicly owned utility serving more than 1 million residents in Duval, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns counties and owns four generating stations. Its board approved a 640 megawatt gas plant at the St. Johns River Power Park site in August 2025.
Florida Power & Light serves more than 6 million customer accounts statewide and lists solar plants in Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties.
Manufacturers
Johnson & Johnson Vision makes more than 1.7 billion ACUVUE lenses a year in Jacksonville. Anheuser-Busch runs its brewery at 111 Busch Drive and announced a $30 million upgrade in January 2026. JAXUSA also lists Medtronic, Zimmer Biomet, Baker Hughes and KLS Martin.
Aerospace and defense
Boeing’s Cecil Airport campus includes a $39 million avionics production facility. BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin also operate in the region. Fleet Readiness Center Southeast has about 5,000 civilian, military and contract workers.
Port, data and industrial sites
JAXPORT’s new cranes at Blount Island and Talleyrand have regenerative power systems. SAFT America makes lithium batteries at Cecil Commerce Center. Operators such as Flexential, Cologix, TierPoint and EdgeConneX run data centers in the metro.
Where the talent sits: Jacksonville submarkets

What’s driving demand for electrical engineers in Jacksonville
- JEA generation. The $1.57 billion, 640 megawatt plant uses a GE Vernova combined cycle turbine and is expected to run by 2032. JEA projects a 406 megawatt deficit in the early 2040s as Northside Unit 3 retires and its Plant Vogtle contract ends.
- FPL solar and storage. Five 74.5 megawatt solar plants in Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties were operating at the end of 2025, with battery storage centers planned at Terrill Creek and Thomas Creek.
- Medical manufacturing. Johnson & Johnson Vision committed more than $1 billion to a new distribution facility and advanced manufacturing and packaging technology. It expects full operation in 2028.
- Brewing and packaging. Anheuser-Busch has invested more than $100 million in Jacksonville since 2021, including $30 million announced in January 2026.
- Large industrial users. A 24 hour manufacturer at Cecil Commerce Center has applied for utility service, and Hillwood tracks prospects of 1 million to 1.5 million square feet for automated distribution.
- Data centers. Nassau, Clay and Putnam counties passed moratoria in 2026, and a Duval council member is weighing similar rules. See our US data center map.
Electrical specialties tied to these projects
- Power plant and substation engineers for JEA’s new gas plant and grid work.
- Utility-scale solar and storage engineers for FPL sites in Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties.
- Industrial power and automation engineers for J&J Vision, Anheuser-Busch and other plants. See our controls engineer guide.
- Avionics and defense electronics engineers for Boeing, BAE Systems and Fleet Readiness Center Southeast.
- Mission critical design engineers for data center and telecom sites.
The talent pipeline
- University of North Florida. UNF’s BS in electrical engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The school also offers civil, mechanical and advanced manufacturing engineering.
- Licensing. Power and utility roles often prefer a Florida PE license, issued by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers after the FE and PE exams.
- Military and defense. Navy installations. NAS Jacksonville, Naval Station Mayport and Blount Island Command are in the metro, and Fleet Readiness Center Southeast overhauls aircraft, engines and components. See our electrical engineer guide.
What this means if you’re hiring
- Expect Orlando to compete on electronics. Orlando’s electronics median of $133,390 is $19,770 above Jacksonville’s, and Orlando’s electrical median is $2,600 higher.
- Price mid-career roles above $93,980. That is the 25th percentile, and it beats Orlando by $13,250.
- Price senior roles at $136,260 or higher. That is the 75th percentile for electrical engineers, which tops Orlando by $7,770.
- Watch utility and plant timelines. JEA’s plant targets 2032, and J&J Vision targets 2028, so both will draw on the same pool for years.
