Atlanta Data Center Engineer Talent Map (2026)

Atlanta now builds more data center capacity than any other market in North America. Here is what data center engineers and technicians earn, who employs them, where the campuses are and what is slowing or speeding the build-out.

Staffing a data center project?

A talent map shows where a group of professionals works, what they are paid and who else is trying to hire them. This one covers the engineers and technicians who design, build and run data centers in metro Atlanta. There is no single government job category for data center engineers, so pay figures use the closest Bureau of Labor Statistics occupations (May 2025). Market and project data come from 2026 reports. Our data center recruiters update it as new data comes out. See also our Georgia data center tracker and our Atlanta electrical and mechanical engineer talent maps.

Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS, May 2025, via O*NET OnLine. BLS publishes no Atlanta estimate for electrical engineers (SOC 17-2071); electronics engineers (17-2072) is the nearest local figure. Wage surveys run about a year behind current offers.

Published postings fill in the operations side. Microsoft’s posting for a critical environment technician at its Fayetteville site listed national pay bands of $23.65 to $48.03 an hour, depending on level. QTS’s Atlanta critical environment engineer postings ask for a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus HVAC or critical power certifications.

Who employs data center engineers in Atlanta

Operators and hyperscalers

QTS runs its Atlanta-Metro campus on Jefferson Street NW and a large campus in Fayetteville, where Microsoft’s Fairwater AI data center began operating in October 2025. Google has operated in Douglas County since 2003, and AWS has announced $11 billion for data centers in Butts and Douglas counties.

Other operators with metro campuses include DC BLOX, EdgeConneX, T5, Switch, STACK, Digital Realty and Equinix.

General contractors

Holder Construction, headquartered in Atlanta, says it has delivered more than 6.4 GW of data center capacity. DPR built DataBank’s ATL1 high-performance computing center at Tech Square, and Brasfield & Gorrie runs an Atlanta mission critical team.

Contractors hire project engineers, MEP coordinators, superintendents and project managers.

Design and MEP engineering firms

Design firms hire electrical, mechanical, fire protection and controls engineers for data center work. Atlanta-headquartered Newcomb & Boyd is hiring a data center specialist, and Burns & McDonnell has posted mission critical electrical engineering roles in Atlanta.

Utilities and power

Every campus needs new substations and transmission. Georgia Power plans about 13 GW of new resources, most online within five years, largely to serve data centers. See our Atlanta electrical engineer talent map for utility employers.

Frequently asked questions

How much do data center engineers make in Atlanta?

It depends on the discipline. In metro Atlanta, electronics engineers (the closest local figure for electrical engineers) have a median of $135,350, mechanical engineers $102,020, and stationary engineers, the closest category for critical facilities roles, $71,850, according to May 2025 BLS data.

Where are data centers being built in Atlanta?

Mostly west and south of the city, in Douglas, south Fulton, Fayette and Coweta counties, close to fiber routes and Georgia Power transmission lines. See every large project on our Georgia data center tracker.

Who hires data center engineers in Atlanta?

Operators such as QTS, Microsoft, Google, AWS, DC BLOX, EdgeConneX and T5; contractors such as Holder, DPR and Brasfield & Gorrie; and design firms such as Newcomb & Boyd and Burns & McDonnell.

Is Atlanta a good market for data center careers?

Yes. Atlanta has more data center capacity under construction than any other market in North America, and the build-out depends on power and permits more than on demand.
