US Oil Refineries Map: Every Refinery and Its Capacity (2026)
Every operable oil refinery in the United States on one map, with its operator, location and crude capacity. Built from federal EIA data and updated when refineries close, restart or change hands.
Hiring refinery engineers? The US has 123 operable oil refineries with about 18.0 million barrels per day of crude distillation capacity, spread across 30 states. The largest is the Port Arthur Refinery in Port Arthur, run by Motiva Enterprises (Saudi Aramco). The map and table below show every one of them, using the latest EIA Refinery Capacity Report plus closures, restarts and ownership changes since it was published.

Capacity is atmospheric crude distillation capacity in barrels per calendar day from the EIA Refinery Capacity Report (data as of January 1, 2026), with later closures, restarts and ownership changes applied from the linked sources. "Operable" includes idle refineries, as EIA counts them. Last updated October 2026.

The biggest US refining companies
Refining is concentrated in a few large companies. Marathon Petroleum runs the most crude capacity, followed by Valero, ExxonMobil and Phillips 66.

How many oil refineries are in the US?
EIA counted 130 operable petroleum refineries on January 1, 2026, down from 135 in 2020, 158 in 2000 and 205 in 1990 (EIA). Six of those 130 process other feedstocks and have no crude distillation unit, so they are not on the map, and Valero’s Benicia refinery in California has since closed. That leaves the 123 crude refineries shown above.
Fewer refineries does not mean much less capacity. US crude distillation capacity was about 18.2 million barrels per calendar day on January 1, 2026, only slightly below its record of about 19 million in 2020, because the remaining refineries have grown. For more numbers, see our oil refinery statistics.
Where are the oil refineries in the US?
Most US refining capacity sits on the Gulf Coast. On January 1, 2026, the Gulf Coast region (EIA’s PAD District 3) had 58 refineries and about 9.9 million barrels per day of capacity, roughly 54% of the US total (EIA, Table 1). Texas alone has 34% of US capacity and Louisiana 17%.
- Houston and Galveston Bay. 11 refineries along the Houston Ship Channel, in Texas City and at Sweeny. See refineries in Houston.
- Beaumont and Port Arthur. Home to the largest US refinery (Motiva) and three more large plants run by ExxonMobil, Valero and TotalEnergies.
- Corpus Christi. Citgo, Flint Hills, Valero and several condensate splitters.
- Louisiana. Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River refineries between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. See oil refineries in Louisiana.
- The Midwest. Large refineries at Whiting, Indiana, Wood River and Joliet in Illinois, and in Ohio, Kansas, Oklahoma and Minnesota.
- The West Coast. California, Washington and Alaska have their own refining hubs, largely separated from the rest of the US pipeline network.

Refinery closures and new refineries
More US refineries are closing than opening. LyondellBasell closed its Houston refinery in 2025, Phillips 66 closed its Los Angeles refinery the same year, and Valero’s Benicia refinery stopped processing crude in early 2026, together about 400,000 barrels per day of capacity. Six refineries closed in 2020 alone.
The newest US refinery is Texas International Terminals’ 45,000 barrel-per-day plant in Galveston, which started in February 2022. The last large refinery built from scratch was Marathon’s Garyville, Louisiana, in 1977. A new refinery planned at the Port of Brownsville was announced in March 2026. Refinery jobs and the engineers behind them
US petroleum and coal products manufacturing employed about 108,700 people in August 2026. The largest group is refinery operators, with a median wage of $103,160 in that industry. Behind the operators are process, chemical, mechanical, electrical and controls engineers, and every few years each refinery brings in thousands of contract workers for a turnaround.

How we build this map
- Source: every refinery, operator and capacity figure starts from the EIA Refinery Capacity Report (data as of January 1, 2026), the federal government’s official count.
- Capacity: atmospheric crude distillation capacity in barrels per calendar day, the standard EIA measure. “Operable” includes refineries that are temporarily idle.
- Changes since then: closures, restarts and sales are applied from company releases, EIA and news reports, and each changed row links to its source.
- Operators: shown as the parent company most people know (for example, Premcor and Diamond Shamrock are listed as Valero).
- Pins: placed at the refinery or its town, so they are approximate.

Oil refinery FAQ
How many oil refineries are in the US?
EIA counted 130 operable refineries on January 1, 2026. 123 of them have crude distillation capacity and are still operable after the 2026 Benicia closure. They are all on the map above.
What is the largest oil refinery in the US?
The Port Arthur Refinery in Port Arthur, run by Motiva Enterprises (Saudi Aramco), with about 656,400 barrels per day of crude capacity.
Which state has the most oil refineries?
Texas, with 29 refineries and about 6.1 million barrels per day of capacity, followed by Louisiana with 14.
Who owns the most refineries in the US?
By crude capacity, Marathon Petroleum is the largest US refiner. Valero runs the most refineries after Marathon, and ExxonMobil, Phillips 66 and Chevron are next. See the company table above.
When was the last oil refinery built in the US?
The newest is Texas International Terminals’ small Galveston refinery, which started in 2022. The last large, full-conversion refinery built from scratch was Garyville, Louisiana, in 1977.
Are oil refineries closing?
Yes, slowly. Three refineries with about 400,000 barrels per day of combined capacity closed between 2025 and early 2026, most of it in California and Houston. The rest are running harder: US refineries ran at an average of 92% of capacity in 2025.
