Contract vs Contract-to-Hire vs Direct Hire for Engineering Roles

A contract job is a position with a set end date or project scope, usually filled through a staffing firm that employs and pays you. Contract-to-hire is a contract with a trial period that is meant to end in a permanent offer. Direct hire means the company hires you as its own permanent employee from day one. Engineering and IT employers use all three, depending on how long they need the skills and how sure they are of the role.

Key takeaways

  • Contract work covers a project, a phase or a busy period. It ends when the work is done unless it is extended.
  • Contract-to-hire is a trial, often three to six months, before the company decides on a permanent offer.
  • Direct hire is a permanent role on the company’s own payroll and benefits from the start.
  • Most engineering and IT contractors placed by staffing firms are W-2 employees of the firm, not the client company.
  • Contract arrangements are a small share of US jobs: the BLS counted 862,000 contract firm workers and 945,000 temp agency workers in July 2023.

What is a contract job?

A contract job, also called a contract position, is a role with a defined end date or scope of work. An engineering firm might bring on a contract mechanical designer to finish a product launch, a manufacturer might add a contract controls engineer for a line installation, and an IT department might hire a contract developer for a system migration. When the project ends, the contract ends unless it is extended or converted.

Contract positions are usually posted with an expected length, such as “12 month contract,” and an hourly rate. Extensions are common when projects run long or new work comes up, and many engineers build long careers moving from one contract to the next.

What is contract work, and how are contractors paid?

Contract work simply means working under a contract for a specific period or deliverable instead of as a permanent employee. How you are paid depends on the arrangement. Most engineering and IT contractors placed through a staffing firm are W-2 employees of that firm, which withholds taxes and may offer benefits. Independent contractors are paid on a 1099 and handle their own taxes, and some experienced contractors bill through their own company on a corp to corp basis. Our guide to W2 vs 1099 vs corp to corp explains the differences.

Why take a contract role? Higher hourly pay, variety and the chance to build skills fast are the main draws, as we explain in why you should take a contract job. The tradeoff is less predictability between assignments.

What is contract-to-hire?

Contract-to-hire, sometimes called temp-to-hire or temp-to-perm, starts as a contract and is designed to become a permanent job. You work on the client’s team doing the real job, but the staffing firm is your employer during the trial. At the end, the company decides whether to convert you, extend the contract or end the assignment.

Employers like it because they can see an engineer’s work before committing. Candidates get a close look at the team, the manager and the projects before signing on long term. We cover the employer side in what contract-to-hire means for engineering teams.

During the contract phase, benefits come from the staffing firm. Under the Affordable Care Act, employers with 50 or more full-time equivalent employees must offer health coverage to full-time employees or may owe a payment, according to the IRS. Paid time off and retirement plans vary by firm, so ask before you accept.

Recruiter tip: If you are offered a contract-to-hire role, ask three questions up front: how long the contract is planned to run, how many past contractors on this team were converted and what salary range the company expects to offer at conversion.

What is direct hire?

Direct hire is a traditional permanent job. The company is your employer from the first day, you are on its payroll and benefits, and there is no planned end date. When a staffing firm handles a direct hire search, it finds and screens candidates, and the employer pays a placement fee once someone is hired. The candidate does not pay anything.

What is IT contract staffing?

IT contract staffing is when a company brings in technology professionals, such as software developers, data engineers, cloud engineers or IT project managers, through a staffing firm for a set period. The firm recruits, screens and employs the contractor, and the client pays an hourly bill rate. It is one of the most common ways companies add IT capacity for projects, system rollouts and backfills without adding permanent headcount. Apollo Technical’s IT staffing agency and software developer recruiters provide IT contract, contract-to-hire and direct hire staffing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a contract job?

A contract job is a position with a defined end date or project scope. You are usually employed and paid by a staffing firm while you work at the client company, and the job ends when the contract ends unless it is extended.

What is a contract position vs a full-time position?

A contract position has a set term and is often paid hourly through a staffing firm. A full-time direct hire position is permanent, salaried and comes with the company’s own benefits.

Is contract-to-hire the same as temp-to-hire?

Yes. Contract-to-hire, temp-to-hire and temp-to-perm all describe a trial contract that is meant to lead to a permanent offer.

How long does a contract job last?

It depends on the project. Engineering and IT contracts commonly run from a few months to a year or more, and extensions are common.

Do contract workers get benefits?

W-2 contractors can get benefits through the staffing firm that employs them, depending on the firm. Independent 1099 contractors arrange their own.

Is contract work a good idea for engineers?

It can be. Contract work often pays a higher hourly rate and builds experience quickly across projects. It suits engineers who value flexibility and can handle gaps between assignments.
