8 tips to make the most out of studying with an online university

Are you about to start studying online and aren’t sure how to make the most out of your studies? We are here to help! Starting an online course can be daunting, but it doesn’t need to be. We have compiled our eight tips that will help you make the most out of studying with an online university to get the knowledge and skills you need for your new career.

1.   Spend time getting organised

Before your course begins, we recommend spending some time getting organised. The more organised you are before the course begins, the easier you might find the course and manage your workload.

You will need a laptop or tablet and a reliable internet connection before the course begins to access the materials. We recommend familiarising yourself with the learning platform the course uses, taking advantage of any tutorials that will help you understand how to use it.

2.   Find the right time to learn

One of the benefits of online study is that you can complete your work at any time and at your convenience. This does mean you need to consider what the best time to study will be. You can take advantage of these flexible study patterns, working at a time when you are most productive.

This might be the first thing in the morning, just before bed, or any other time of day. Consider when you are most productive, as well as your schedule, to ensure that you can make the most of your studying and find the perfect time to study.

3.   Choose the perfect study space

Creating the perfect study space can be challenging, but once you have it, you might find studying much easier. When creating your study space, consider where you feel comfortable and productive. You might want a designated office, space in your bedroom, or dining table. Either way, you want a space that you can dedicate to studying without worrying about interruptions.

You will want to ensure you are comfortable and have adequate lighting, especially if you are studying in the evening. You might also want to invest in noise-cancelling headphones to ensure the noise levels are appropriate for your studying.

4.   Find your preferred learning method

Not everyone learns the same way, so it’s important you take some time to find the best learning method for you. Whether you prefer to learn visually, audibly, or by doing, you can thrive on an online course with a choice of resources to suit your needs.

Once you have decided which learning method is right for you, you can tailor your studies to suit, using visual aids or making use of web content. For some students, a mixture of these methods is best, and most online universities will offer a variety of materials to suit these learning methods.

5.   Create a study schedule

To make the most of studying with an online university, we recommend creating a study schedule for you to follow. Weekly schedules help you break up your work and ensure you are up to date with the course content, while allowing time for additional reading. When creating your schedule, you need to ensure it is as realistic as possible, with time for additional reading.

Think about the time you can dedicate to the course and any issues that could arise and hinder your schedule. Doing so can help you plan how to manage them to avoid falling behind.

6.   Take advantage of online resources

One advantage of online universities is that they tend to provide you with access to all the resources you will need from the get-go. We recommend that you take advantage of all of these resources to ensure you get the most out of your studies. Typically, there will be a hub where you can access all of these resources in one place. There should be resources in a variety of formats that ensure you can reap the benefits of the resources, regardless of your learning style.

Online resources are incredibly helpful, and we recommend setting time aside every day to use the resources and expand your knowledge.

7.   Ask questions where possible

As part of your online studies, make sure you ask questions where possible. Take advantage of any time with your professors to ask any questions you have about the content or the assignments. The more questions you ask, the better you will understand the content, improving your chances of success in the course.

Asking questions can also help to build relationships with your tutors and professors, helping you to get more out of the course.

8.   Connect with other students

We recommend taking some time to connect with other students in your course or at your online university. Many online universities will have discussion boards and forums where you can interact with other students, bounce ideas off each other, and get the support that you need.

The people you meet through these forums could help you understand complex concepts or provide further motivation while you are studying, helping you to make the most out of your online studies. It is worth using these forums to meet other students on your course too, helping you to learn more about them, which can be helpful if group work is expected of you.
