3 Tips for Editing Photos in Photoshop

computer-login

Over 90% of the world’s creative professionals use Adobe Photoshop; it’s clear that this is the leading image editing software. In fact, it’s so popular that even those dabbling in digital photography and art use Photoshop.

While your smartphone’s image editor might’ve sufficed, you now want to step up your photography game. But even though Photoshop is a program used by many, it’s mastered by few. Also, it may be difficult to figure out at first, as it can be unwieldy software for some people.

To help you out, here are 3 tips for editing photos in Photoshop so your images look pristine.

1. Crop Your Photos

Image composition is of the utmost importance. If you don’t do it right, then your picture won’t be compelling.

Thankfully, composition is easy to fix in Photoshop, so if you have an “almost right” image, don’t delete it yet! Simply click on the crop tool in the toolbox. If you want, you can also change the aspect ratio from unconstrained to either one of the preset options, the original ratio, or your own specific ones.

In any case, you can then drag the corners on the edges of your image and shrink it down to what you want. Click the check icon and you’re done!

2. Play With the Brightness and Contrast

Brightness and contrast can make a huge difference in how your photos come out. For instance, if your picture is overexposted, drag the brightness down and the contrast up to make details clearer.

If you don’t know where to start, that’s no problem. Experiment with the sliders until you like what you see.

3. Use Adjustment Layers

If you don’t want to risk ruining your original photo, then use adjustment layers. Your original picture will be the background layer and you can then tinker around with the adjustment layers all you want!

Once you’re done, save the image as a TIFF or PSD file. Don’t save it as a JPG, as it’ll ruin the quality.

Bonus: Use Adobe’s Other Resources

If you’re finding Photoshop too overwhelming, not to worry. Adobe has other resources that make it easy to edit images, and you don’t need prior photo editing knowledge either!

For example, they have a background remover where you just upload your image and they’ll take care of the rest. And best of all is, it’s free! You don’t need to download anything either, so it’s super easy and quick to do.
