The five mile radius where a flyer still beats a paid ad

Most hiring budgets now flow in one direction. Job boards, sponsored posts, programmatic ads that chase a candidate across the internet. It works, until the role is hourly, local, and sitting next to someone who never opens a job board.

A warehouse lead, a field technician, a shop foreman. For those hires, the most underrated channel is also the oldest. A printed flyer, placed where the right people already stand, reaches a radius that a paid ad prices out of reach. The trick is treating it as distribution, not decoration.

Why local roles slip past digital

A sponsored job ad assumes the candidate is searching. Many of the best local hires are not. They are employed, passive, and physically present in the same few square miles as the job. A flyer on a community board, a trade counter, a gym, or a depot break room meets them where a targeted ad never lands.

It does not fight for attention in a feed crowded with everything else. It sits in one place and waits. For a hiring manager filling a route that has to start Monday, that physical presence is the whole point.

Distribution is the entire game

A flyer is only as good as where it goes. The cheapest way to blanket a neighborhood is the US Postal Service program Every Door Direct Mail, which delivers to every address on a chosen carrier route with no mailing list to buy. You select the routes around the job site on a map and the carrier does the rest.

Retail EDDM postage is a flat rate of 0.247 dollars per piece in 2025, the same for every address regardless of size or weight within the format limits. Add printing on top and the all in cost per household still lands somewhere between a quarter and half a dollar, a number you can set straight next to your cost per applicant from any paid channel.

Format and cost per contact

For recruiting the format earns its keep. A sturdy sheet around 250 to 350 gsm survives a pocket and a clipboard. A clear headline, the wage, and a QR code to apply turn a glance into an application.

Order custom flyers cut to the EDDM dimensions and the postage holds at the flat rate. Measure the run the way you measure ads, as cost per qualified contact, and a local flyer drop often reaches more of the right people per dollar than a boosted post that bleeds budget on zip codes nobody is hiring in.

The channel hiding in plain sight

None of this replaces the job board. It fills the gap the job board leaves. For hourly, skilled, and local roles, a flyer in the right doorway is not a throwback, it is targeting. Helloprint and other print platforms make the production trivial, so the only real work left is the part that always mattered, deciding exactly where the flyer goes.

Helloprint is also B Corp certified, which is starting to matter to employers who vet their own suppliers the way candidates vet them.
