The software Houston employers ask for
- AVEVA PDMS and E3D, Hexagon SmartPlant and AutoCAD Plant 3D for plant and piping design. A 2026 Audubon Engineering instrumentation designer posting asked for PDMS, E3D, Plant 3D and SmartPlant Instrumentation.
- CADWorx for pipeline structures and plant layout.
- Tekla for structural steel detailing.
- Civil 3D for land development, drainage and utilities, used by firms such as LJA.
- MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer for TxDOT and substation work.
- Revit for architecture, MEP and healthcare facilities.
Where Houston’s CAD designers work
EPC firms
KBR is headquartered in Houston, and McDermott signed a 50,498 square foot Energy Corridor lease in 2025. Fluor, Worley, Bechtel, Burns & McDonnell and Zachry Engineering all run Houston design offices.
These firms hire piping, structural, electrical and instrumentation designers for plants along the Gulf Coast.
Civil and land development firms
LJA, headquartered in Houston, and other civil firms hire Civil 3D designers for subdivisions, drainage and utilities. See our Houston civil engineer talent map.
Power and pipelines
Substation and transmission designers are in demand as CenterPoint expands the grid. Primoris Pipeline hires civil and structural designers using CADWorx and Civil 3D.
Hospitals and architecture firms
MD Anderson employs its own CADD and BIM staff, and Houston architecture firms hire Revit designers. See our Houston architect talent map.
Where new drafters are trained
- Houston City College. Formerly Houston Community College, it offers an ABET-accredited drafting and design engineering technology associate degree, with certificates in six specializations, including piping.
- San Jacinto College. Its 60-credit engineering design graphics associate degree, at the Central, North and South campuses, includes pipe drafting, instrumentation and structural steel detailing.
- Lone Star College. A 30-credit CAD operator certificate and an architectural design technology associate degree.
- Alvin Community College. A drafting and design associate degree and certificates.
- Growth. Texas is projected to grow from 13,130 architectural and civil drafting jobs in 2024 to 15,100 in 2034, while mechanical and electrical drafting jobs stay roughly flat.
What this means if you’re hiring
- Plant design is its own market. PDMS, E3D and Smart 3D designers rarely come from civil or architecture backgrounds. Recruit from EPCs and plant owners.
- Pay by specialty. Piping, steel detailing and electrical designers earn far more than general drafters.
- Test before you hire. A short drawing exercise shows more than a resume. Read our guide on how to hire a CAD designer.
- Use the colleges. Houston City College and San Jacinto College teach piping and plant design specifically for Houston employers.
