Can AI Checkers Catch Red Flags in Job Applications? What Recruiters Should Know

communication concept drawing

Artificial intelligence is playing a larger role in our economy every day. One recent survey found that 75% of workers report that they use AI in some capacity or another.

People in existing jobs aren’t the only ones using AI. A growing number of people have started using AI to help them with the job search process.

While there are a number of valid reasons to incorporate AI into the job search, it can also lead to some pitfalls. Engineering Recruiters often worry that job seekers are using AI to misrepresent themselves, which can lead to them hiring unqualified employees.

This is one of the reasons that so many recruiters use an AI checker these days. It can help them hold job seekers accountable.

More Job Seekers Are Using AI to Create Resumes and Cover Letters

There are a number of ways that job seekers use technology to find employment more easily. One of the biggest reasons is that they can use AI to help generate resumes and write cover letters.

A growing number of job seekers are using this technology for these purposes. One survey conducted last fall found that 45% of job seekers used AI to write their resumes.

This is a double-edged sword for both job seekers and employers. On the one hand, job seekers have found that AI helps them create better resumes. One survey found that those using AI got 7.8% more job offers than those who did not. However, some job seekers get blacklisted because they use AI, which some recruiters feel is cheating. Employers might feel that shop seekers using AI are more competent with technology, while others may feel that they have less integrity. There are merits to both points of view, but a growing number of recruiters rightly feel that it is a red flag if job seekers are using AI to create cover letters or resumes.

AI Detectors Seem Appealing to Recruiters Trying to Weed Out People Using AI

Therefore, a growing number of recruiters have started using AI detectors to tell whether resumes, cover letters or other documents have been created with AI. But can this actually help them weed out problematic applicants?

How Do AI Detectors Work?

In order to answer this question, it is important to understand how AI detectors work. Here is an overview.

An AI detector is a program that is trained on many data sets of content created by generative AI tools, as well as those made by humans. AI detectors use sophisticated algorithms to detect the difference between both types of content. They look for a variety of different factors, such as whether the text contains a lot of phrases and words that are frequently used in content made with generative AI tools, whether the content has unique ideas and the level of variability between sentence likes and structure.

AI detectors become better at understanding the differences as they are trained on larger numbers of datasets. As long as they are continually trained on new content, they will be able to keep up with new types of content made with AI.

Do Recruiters Feel They Are Helpful at Identifying Red Flags in Applications?

Although studies have shown that job seekers using AI are more likely to be hired, that statistic does not hold true if they are caught. The truth is that most recruiters don’t look favorably on applicants that use AI. One of the biggest reasons is that they want to see the quality of the applicants’ writing abilities and critical thinking skills. AI technology gives a false impression of them. Another issue is that generative AI tools often make up facts, such as details about the educational and professional backgrounds of the applicant.

Therefore, one major news sites reports that an estimated 80% of recruiters discard any applications that are made with AI. These recruiters have found that AI detectors can be very helpful for tweeting out these applicants.

Most AI detection software is very accurate these days. Some of these tools can identify AI content between 97% and 99% of the time. Therefore, they are going to be more popular as recruiters try to deal with an influx of applicants misrepresenting themselves with AI.

Of course, some applicants may still find ways to get around this. They can use humanizer tools or make tweaks to their resumes and cover letters to trick the AI detectors. However, overall, AI detection software seems to do a good job identifying people that are misusing AI to create content.

AI Detectors Can Help Preserve the Integrity of Job Seekers

A growing number of people are using AI to help with the job search process, but this is understandably leading to concerns about their ethics and actual skillsets. AI detectors are playing an important role in helping recruiters keep people honest. This is a big deal in a world that is increasingly being governed by AI.
